How percentages work
Three common percentage problems and their formulas:
- X% of Y = (X ÷ 100) × Y
- % change = (To − From) ÷ |From| × 100
- "X is Y% of what?" = X ÷ (Y ÷ 100)
Example: a $50 jacket discounted by 20% costs $40; a price rising from $100 to $125 is a 25% increase.
